Pictured is a computer simulation of the process used to extract water from wood pulp during paper manufacturing. Researchers created the simulation in an effort to find new ways to cut the energy and water required to make paper. If manufacturers can reduce energy use by 20 percent, it would save the industry up to $400 million annually. See page 3 for more on how computation is being used to improve American manufacturing.
