CASC Democratization Workgroup

The CASC Democratization Workgroup is focused on expanding access to research computing and data (RCD) resources, particularly for non-R1 institutions. By identifying common challenges and surfacing proven strategies already in use across the CASC community, the group aims to support widespread participation in advanced computing. A key priority is equipping members with tools to demonstrate the institutional value of democratization efforts.

Purpose and Scope

This workgroup is dedicated to improving access to RCD infrastructure, services, and expertise for institutions with limited resources or developing programs. Throughshared strategies and practical recommendations, the group will assist institutions in expanding their participation in the broader research computing landscape.

Key Areas of Focus

  • Needs Inventory: Conduct a rapid assessment to understand institutional challenges and resource gaps.

  • Best Practices Repository: Create a centralized collection of emerging and successful models and case studies.

  • Leadership & Workforce Support: Share strategies that help institutions build and strengthen local RCD teams.

  • ROI & Institutional Messaging: Provide tools to communicate the benefits of investments in RCD services.

Goals & Deliverables

Needs Assessment and Priority Setting

  • Host listening sessions and review previous CASC and partner work.

  • Identify and prioritize needs for institutions developing or expanding RCD capabilities.

  • Launched a repository of member practices that support greater access to RCD resources.

Workforce Development

  • Inventory existing training and professional development opportunities.

  • Share materials and examples from CASC member institutions.

Regional Engagement and Collaboration

  • Document effective, scalable models from regional partnerships.

  • Identify opportunities for joint efforts to address shared challenges.

Resource Allocation and ROI

  • Develop messaging tools that help institutions demonstrate the value of RCD investments.

  • Identify funding sources that can support institutional growth in RCD.

Outreach and Communication

  • Improve communication channels for sharing member initiatives and updates.

  • Highlight success stories and replicable approaches for strengthening RCD programs.
